Today many people tend to take thier wet suit for granted. They put it on, it gets wet, they take it off and it dries. But a wet suit will not clean itself, there is more to maintenance that needs to be done. If a wet suit is properly taken care of it will last for many years. First make for sure you dry your wet suit on a heavy duty hanger so that you do not leave marks and ridges on it. As the wet suit dries out it will tend to take the shape of the hanger so you want the hanger to be made out of wood, heavy duty plastic or a padded hanger. Do not use a metal hanger. The ridges left by a wire hanger can easily cause stretch marks and cracks in the wet suit. Also the water from the suit will rust the hanger and leave rust marks on your suit. Generally you need to take off the wet suit and turn it inside out and put it on the hanger so it dries more completely and then store it right side out. Do not dry it out in the sun. The UV rays from the sun will damage the suit if left out for too long. The ideal is to keep the stress on the wet suit to a minimum as it dries out. For long term storage after it is dry, lay it out flat in a dry and cool place away from the sun. Do not store it in your garage. Car exhaust gases can also damage the suit. Saltwater is not very good for your wet suit. If you do not rinse the saltwater off it will start to corrode the suit. Chlorine in swimming pools is also very hard on it when combined with sunlight. Always rinse your wet suit off with fresh water as soon as possible after each use. Regularly cleaning of a wet suit should always be done. Never put it in a conventional washer and drier. It should be hand cleaned using either a special shampoo designed for use on wet suits or a very mild shampoo such as baby shampoo. Use warm water, not hot to rinse and then dry thoroughly afterwards. If you use your wet suit regularly, you should clean it in this fashion about once every two weeks. To keep the suit from smelling bad every three months rinse it in fresh water with a small amount of disinfectant mixed in. Companies that make wet suit shampoo generally also make deodorizer for disinfecting. Always remember that saltwater, heat, sunlight, chlorine, stretch marks and sharp folds are your wet suits enemies. For many years of good service clean it regularly.
