Many people today still think of a wet suit as a diving suit that is used for scuba diving. But today the need to protect our bodies while enjoying water activites have given birth to many other types of wet suits. Today the most popular style are the shorty and the full body wet suit. Both types of wet suits provide insulation and protection but a shorty is typically preferred for warmer waters. It is also preferred by those who do not want to be restricted in their movements. Most people will agree that a shorty wet suit is more comfortable than the full body wet suit. A shorty wet suit are called such because they only cover half of the arms, the torso and the thigh, mostly above the knees. Women today find that the shorty is more flattering than a full body wet suit and are better for those acivities that require a more natural freedom of movement such as kayaking, surfing, and wakeboarding. But the shorty wet suit is not ideal for use in cold waters because they are less effective in retaining body heat. If you are planning on being in cold water you really need a full body wet suite. This type is more effective in retaining body heat and are specially designed for water temperature below 68F. A full body wet suit covers the entire body including arms and legs. This helps protect the wearer from hypothermia. Hypothermia can lead to serious bodily injuries and even death. A full body wet suit is preferred mostly by people who love to scuba dive and snorkeling. In these situations a full body wet suit will provide protection from a great number of potential dangers when in the water in addition to protection from the cold. These water hazards are jelly fish and poisonous stings and bites, scrapes from rocks and coral formations. Safety is important and a full body wet suit is better than a shorty when cold is a concern. If you are concerned about freedom of movement in the waters, you may want to consider a lighter full body wet suit but offers the same kind of body coverage as the thicker full body wet suit.
